The Fifth Pocket Mystery Unveiled

Have you ever wondered what the tiny fifth pocket on the front of jeans was originally intended for? That little pouch has had several titles throughout the years including coin pocket, match pocket, and ticket pocket. However, it was created as a safe place for men to store their pocket watches. It dates back to Levi’s first-ever pair of “waist overalls” – the original name for jeans - which hit the market in 1879. Those original copper-riveted jeans had a tiny pocket to hold small pocket watches for working men, from carpenters and miners to railroad engineers. And the design has stuck ever since.
